Emu Oil for the Winter
Posted October 15, 2009
on:Winter is fast approaching and as I sit here typing I’m wrapped up in a scarf and a big jacket, with the impending coldness of the month we really need to look after ourselves.
Joints
As someone with repetitive strain injury I have found that my wrists get worse in the winter due to cold hands, this is also the case for arthritis sufferers. To combat the aches and pains you often get throughout the winter months try some Emu Oil with Glucosamine to help ease pain and swelling. Hopefully you won’t intend to move from your seat in front of the fire but use that Glucosamine cream just in case you need to.
Skin
The cold weather and harsh winds can dry out your skin, not to mention your central heating. As soon as you switch this on it dries out the air in your home and your skin too. Now, don’t sit there shivering in your house just because you want super smooth, soft skin; whack that heating on and invest in a good oil based moisturiser such as the Emu Oil Face Creams. Moisturising your skin with the day cream will protect your face from the drying effects of the environment and the night cream will help to replenish your skin whilst you sleep. Also, as a bonus they are both anti-aging too!
Hair
Your hair can also suffer in the winter, with the wind whipping it into chaos and your central heating drying it out you need something that can help protect against all this. Using a product such as Emu Oil Shampoo followed by the Conditioner can help to tame frizzy hair, keep it looking soft and shiny and also will rid you of any nasty dandruff. I’d recommend tying your hair back when you go outside on a windy day. Not only will you look more controlled but you can then get to your destination, let their hair down, and amaze the wind swept crowd with your stunning, shiny locks.
Hands
Hands suffer in winter due to the cold and the rain, people expose their hands to wet gloves, snow, icy rails and damp pockets. All this can make your hands go dry and crack
. Find a good hand cream such as Emu Oil Hand Cream that you can pop into your bag and use as soon as you get in from the cold. This will keep your hands hydrated and will stop them from cracking with all the temperature changes.
Lips
In the winter the sun can still be strong enough to damage your skin, especially when there is snow involved. Lips are the most vulnerable to this damage so make sure you carry a lip balm with you at all times. Emu Oil Lip Balm will hydrate your lips and won’t leave them feeling dry as soon as it has worn off like Petroleum Jelly. On particularly sunny, snow covered days wear a thin coat of sun cream under your lip balm for added protection.

You need to look after your feet, especially now that summer is here and you will be donning those flip-flops. Your feet need to look well pedicured and certainly steer clear of any cracked, dry skin.
Pedicures
Obviously if you can afford regular pedicures then go for it, not only will your feel look great but you will feel brilliant being pampered. Even if you can go for the odd pedicure every couple of months then pay attention to what the beautician is doing and these tricks will be useful when caring for your feet yourself. Having regular pedicures means you can forego a lot of the following practices but you never know when you might need to relieve cracked skin when your beautician is on holiday,
Why do we get cracked heels?
The bottom of your foot is naturally hard with thick skin allowing us to walk barefoot, stand for a long amount of time and wear shoes comfily. The skin around the heel can become cracked from prolonged standing, existing skin conditions, the type of shoes we wear and exposure to changing conditions. These things can’t always be avoided but if you treat your feet well then the cracks won’t even get the chance to show.
Creams
Using a strong moisturiser will keep the skin cells soft and supple meaning that cracks will take longer to form and will be less noticeable. Using a normal body moisturiser might be enough to keep them soft but I’d recommend a cream made especially for dry heels. Something like Emu Heel Balm should be used on dry heels just out of the bath or shower, your open pores will allow the cream to soak in penetrating all layers of the skin.
Pumice Stones
These are rough stone used to reduce the thickness of the skin, taking it down to layer that hasn’t already become cracked and dry. This makes the skin smoother, more supple and gives a good base for the moisturising step.
Exfoliation
Usually an exfoliator made for the body won’t be strong enough to get rid of the dry, dead skin, use one made for feet or another good option is the Dead Sea salt scrubs. These are full of different natural ingredients that will be good to skin and yet will remove unwanted, dead skin.
The process.
It is best to get rid of the excess skin with a pumice stone, so your heels are no longer hard, then exfoliate your feet all over don’t just stick to the heel, all of your foot needs looking after. Then apply an oil based moisturisers that will get right down into the lower layers to make sure you are well moisturised. Do this all over your feet also, paying attention to other hard areas such as the ball of your foot.
After this you can then move on to clipping and filing your toe nails and then painting them. Try and remember what your beautician does and repeat those steps, you’ll have beautifully soft, pedicured feet in no time.
Ways to treat sensitive skin
Posted July 23, 2009
on:Sensitive skin tends to be easily irritated by most skin care and cosmetics products, the reason for this is that they contain all sorts of harsh chemicals that react badly with sensitive skin types.
Natural products
Using natural products will steer you clear of harsh petrochemicals, additives and preservatives that are likely to harm your skin. Although most natural products are unlikely to harm your skin it is always best to do a test before putting anything on your skin if you haven’t used it before. Because natural products boast only ingredients from nature then they is probably little in them that will dry out your skin or irritate it. In fact products like Emu Oil have excellent moisturising properties perfect for dry or sensitive skin; it is also non-allergenic and will not block your pores.
Products for sensitive skin
These products are probably your best bet if you wish to play it safe, however the out come of using these is generally pretty boring. Although products for sensitive skin will not irritate or dry out your skin they are limited and sometimes hard to find. If you want a really powerful moisturiser then it would be best to chance the natural products section of your local store. Don’t use bars of soap If you wish yourself with soap and find you are getting out of the bath or shower with your skin feeling tight and dry then you need to rethink what you wash yourself with. Using a shower gel with moisturising properties and no harsh chemicals in is bound to leave you feeling fresher and softer once you emerge from your washing regime.
Know what works and what doesn’t
If you’ve had sensitive skin all your life then you’ll know what products affect you and which don’t, when you do get a bad reaction from something look at what it has in it. Chances are it is full of harsh chemical and very little natural ingredients, not down these things so you steer clear of them in the future. Similarly if you find that one product is brilliant on your skin buy others in that range and note down what they have in them. It is likely that other product containing those ingredients will also be safe for your skin.
Cold water
Splashing your face with cold water with help to shrink pores; if you then follow this with a gentle moisturiser then the products you wish to use you will be less susceptible to the ingredient of the other products. If you find a very good moisturiser and put this on before you apply foundation then it can prep your face making any dry / sensitive spots that may be red or flaky less noticeable.
Why a skincare routine is important
Posted July 9, 2009
on:Having a skincare routine can ensure that your skin stays looking healthy and young. However, you shouldn’t over do it or your skin can become dry and rough.
Makeup remover
For the ladies, taking your makeup off every night is essential, if you don’t do this then the makeup will smear and clog your pores whilst you sleep. Dirty, clogged pores lead to spots, preventing spots is much easier than dealing with them. This is especially important if you wear foundation because that is going to clog up every pore on your face, even if you use one of the lighter foundations. Also if you want to keep your skin looking young then remove that makeup, leaving it one can damage your skin making it more prone to wrinkles.
Cleanser
Cleansing your skin is important; it helps to remove any dirt or oil from your night’s sleep, leaving your face fresh and ready for the day ahead. If you have particularly oily skin then get a cleanser specifically designed for that, if you don’t then you will find that it just makes your skin oilier. There are a few types of cleanser that you can buy the creamy cleansers tend to be the best for dry or normal skin, oily skin types should use one that is clear.
Exfoliate
Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from your face as well as any dirt that had gone deep into those pores. There are a few ways to exfoliate, you can use an exfoliating scrub with luke warm water or you can buy exfoliating pads that you use like makeup remover wipes. Once you are done your skin should be left feeling very smooth, the prefect canvas to now moisturise.
Toner
Not everyone uses this as most believe that their cleanser should be able to remove all the dirt there. However, toner is used for very oily skin that needs a bit of drying out. It tends to be stronger than cleanser and can leave sensitive skin stinging, if you have sensitive or dry skin then it is advisable to find a toner that is made for your skin type.
Moisturiser
There are various types of moisturiser, most are for daily use and quite gentle on the skin, these are great for people with normal skin who just want that extra bit of softness in morning and before they go to bed. However, if you have particularly dry skin then get yourself a night moisturiser. These tend to be heavier with more moisturising properties in them, like the name suggests they are to be used before you go to bed. The reason for this is because they are very strong moisturisers they are liable to leave your skin looking rather oily, using your cleanser the next morning with get rid of this oiliness leaving you well moisturised.
Frequency
In the morning you should cleanse, tone and moisturise. If you have a gentle exfoliator that is suitable for daily use then factor this into the morning routine however, if you have quite a strong exfoliator then best to only use it once or twice a week. If you use it more then you run the risk of scrubbing your face red raw. Make sure the moisturiser you are using is light enough that it won’t leave you looking shiny, if you are prone to shiny skin then use some translucent powder to combat this.
In the evening make sure you remove your makeup then cleanse if you feel the need to, for those with dry skin apply a night moisturiser to soften that skin over night. By removing your makeup before bed it give you one less thing to do in the morning this makes slims down the morning routine and you also unclog those pores before bedtime.
