How to Keep Hair Looking Shiny and Healthy

Posted on: July 1, 2009

In these summer months it is essential that you look after your hair, being in the sun can cause your hair to dry out which means split ends. Some people are under the illusion that the more hair is washed the healthier it will be, this is not the case.

Products

The key to healthy hair is to use the correct products for your hair type, for example if you have coloured hair then using shampoo and condition specifically for it then you will avoid your hair colour fading and looking lifeless. A great way of making sure that your hair stays full of body and shine is to use natural products that aren’t clogged with harsh petrochemicals, natural products tend to be gentler on the hair and with a boom in interest for them they are now widely available on the high street.

It is also best to use a shampoo and a conditioner to wash your hair, the reason hair loses its shine is because it is dry, using a conditioner will combat this and give you gorgeous hair. It is also best to wash your hair every other day, as using various products on it day in and day out can also dry it out.

Heat Styling.

This can be so damaging to hair, causing split ends and dullness if not done in the correct manner. When blow drying, straightening or curling hair the proper precautions should be used. There are various products out there that will protect your hair from the heat, they stop your hair drying out and keep it moisturised so by the end of the styling process you will help beautifully styled, shiny hair.

Tips and Tricks

If you rinse your hair with cold water it will enhance its shine, the reason for this is that the cold water doesn’t dry the hair instead it smooths the cuticles making it look softer and more full of shine.

Once your hair is dry brush through it a couple of times with a brush or comb, this will distribute the natural oils from your scalp across your hair giving it a fabulous, all natural shine. Try and use a brush that is full of natural bristles this will ensure that you don’t just brush out all the essential oils.

When you’ve finished blow-drying or straightening your hair give your locks a blast of cold air to help smooth those cuticles once again. This gives a similar effect to rinsing your hair with cold water and also helps to protect against heat damage.
